So, I listen to a lot of music, right.

So I don't know, some might think it makes me less likely to enjoy Vocaloid singers. Some might think my wide range of musical interest actually means it would be a crime for me not to listen and find some good about it. If you thought the latter, you'd be right. Thats not to say that it's mediocre or anything. No, far from it, for machines, Vocaloid singers have come on a hell of a lot.

(For those of you who don't know what the frell I'm talking about, Vocaloid is a "singing synthesizer application" (Thanks for that phrase, Wikipedia) Most sing best in Japenese, but a few are about that do English well, too)

If you're really listening hard with an ear for a human singer, you'll be dissapointed most likely. But if you just sit and listen to these, and think that the sounds are coming from a computer, you may be plesantly surprised.

I just wanted to share a few interesting bits and bobs, really. It's a very small range of Vocaloids, theres a distinct youtube leaning towards the ones that have been 'personified'. Theres one Vocaloid here who is English and not common. And another who is bilingual. If you look them up on Wiki, it'll tell you who's what.

I tried to get a good range, but bear in mind that when it comes to Vocaloids, Hatsune Miku is probably the most popular thing going, and the Twins (Kagamine Len and Rin) are pretty high up too. As for the male vocaloids, well... Theres only really one Keito tune I like, and it's not as good as it could be (It's A-ha's Take on me if you want to look it up) so I've left him out. It's obviously easier to get a good song from a vocaloid that a lot of people of differing skill levels have used.

'Soul's Refrain' I think this is called. From NGE, sung here by Miku, Len and Rin - This track is actually so much a fave of mine that I discount the ORIGINAL track because I prefer this one. This is no mean feat.

Miku sings Belinda Carlisle's 'Heaven is a place on Earth' first ver and Second version - using an updated Miku and very pretty graphics - Miku here has different strengths and weaknesses throughout the tune. I really cant decide which version is better, and this is probably the weakest of the tunes I've posted. But I've got a soft spot for the song, and I think for a Japenese speaking vocaloid she's been made to do remarkably well.

Next up, Cruel Angel's thesis (NGE again!) from Len and Rin I really like the harmonising between the twins here, despite the tinnyness of the verses.

Prima! Singing Opera :D I have no idea what Opera this is but its pretty neat :)

Luka and Miku try their hands at Starship's 'Nothing's gonna stop us now' Whenever I see this vid I yell, "Yay! Lesbians!"
Again, better harmonisation then verses.

But er...

Sacriligeous as it may seem... THIS is ultimate Vocaloid love. As a Beatles fan... I love this. This one's Sweet Ann, singing 'Let it be'.
A little strange in the stops and starts of the lines, but this is. Just hell damn sweet.

So yeah, give them a chance before whining :)
bekkypk: (Nosferatu)
I said a few days ago I'd been given a copy of Nosferatu for Christmas and that I'd like to review it. Now, I'm not a lot of good at reviewing - I get too over excited about films I love. I also took nearly 800 caps of the 90 minute film while I was watching it, so you could also say I'm not really a good judge of how best to cut down that number. Theres a lot of caps behind this link (But don't worry, it's less then a hundred. If you have a lot of trouble downloading it might be best for you to check out the gallery ( and view them one by one. A lot of my review is done in comments to the caps. It's also become less a review, and more a noting of key points and thoughts, as the story progresses.

I recently argued with somebody over why Nosferatu should still be around at all. Nosferatu is not... scary. Not to people in this modern age. But it still sends a tingle down my spine. It employs the old tactic of minimal use of the monster, to produce maximum effect.

I hope these caps help show people why the film deserves to be remembered, inspires some people to go out and buy the film, and encourages people to watch it from time to time.

So, here we go!

Horrifying :D

Onwards to Nosferatu, not dial up happy :D )
